I just wanted to give a brief note before posting about Understanding Video Games: The Essential Introduction, by Simon Egenfeldt Nielsen, Jonas Heide Smith, and Susana Pajares Tosca. While my posts seem to do nothing but criticize the book, it is still an important text worth examination and study.
Despite all of the mistakes and missteps (of which there are many), the book does offer a good cross-section of the major relevant theories, and thus acts as a solid introductory/overview text. This reasoning is why I suggested its inclusion in the readings, as recognizing the faults in a piece of writing is just as important as recognizing its virtues, and this book has both.
